Who we are
Maricopa County Animal Care & Control is a public animal shelter committed to finding good outcomes to lost, surrendered, and stray dogs. Many of the dogs brought into the center are so good they deserve a second chance so are made available for adoption. Check out available pets online and write down the name and A# for the animals you want to meet. Our population changes every few minutes, so check the list of pets an hour before coming in to view current animal availability. You can visit the shelters to preview additional pets that may be available to adopt soon. Maximize your visit by knowing which animals you would like to meet beforehand to help determine if you might be a great match. For health and safety reasons, personal pets are NOT permitted in the shelters..

See information about the Maricopa County Animal Care & Control on their Facebook Page

Lost your dog?
Stray dogs are held at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control, 3-5 days before they are put up for adoption or destroyed. Some of these dogs may have been claimed, rescued or euthanized. DO NOT phone the center to check whether your lost dog is there. Hundreds of dogs pass through the center every week. It is not possible for the staff to recognise your dog among the 150 dogs that are brought in every day. Visit the center everyday during their opening hours to check whether your dog has been brought in.

New Hope Program
When Maricopa County Animal Care & Control say that a dog went to "New Hope" they mean it was put into their New Hope Program and passed to one of the 100+ rescue organizations that participate in this scheme. Read more about the New Hope Program

Through its New Hope Rescue Program in 2014, MCACC transferred 12,129 dogs and cats to other animal welfare and rescue organizations. More than 40 Chihuahuas were sent to rescue groups in other states where the small breed is in high demand.

Find the right dog for you
When looking for that new family member please remember to really think about the things you and your family want and need in a pet that fits the family lifestyle. Get to know your breeds! Some breeds require more space, exercise and circumstances than others. Even if you are going to adopt a mixed breed, look into what it's primary breed needs in a home, environment and exercise. Your new family member needs to be wanted by everyone in the family and included in your daily lives to be truly happy. Click here for more information on how to find the right dog.

Fostering a dog
We have many dogs at the shelter that are available to be fostered (given a temporary home until we find it a permanent home).
  • Dogs thrive in calm safe spaces accompanied by humans to keep them entertained.
  • We learn more about their character which makes it easier to find them a home.
  • You can foster for a few days or a few weeks.
  • We can customize your experience.
  • Food and supplies provided.
